From signing up Hugh Jackman to becoming the number two player in the Indian smartphone market, Micromax has thrown everything to make it big. After being successful in the Android sphere, the company will now try to repeat the magic on Windows Phone starting with Canvas Win, the first Windows Phone series from the company.
Under the Canvas Win brand, Micromax will be selling two models, Canvas Win W092 and Canvas Win 121. The former is probably the cheapest Windows Phone handset till date, beating even the Lumia 520. Canvas Win W092 packs a 4″ WVGA IPS display and runs on Snapdragon 200 quad core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. Unlike budget offerings from Nokia however, it comes packing 1GB RAM. Other specs include 5MP camera, VGA front camera, 8GB internal memory, 1,500mAh battery and dual SIM capabilities.
Canvas Win 121 on the other hand is more premium of the two, packing the same internals (except for an unconfirmed battery), but a larger 5 inch 720p display. It also packs 8MP/2MP cameras on the back and front.
Both the phones will retail in the Indian market starting from July. The Canvas Win W092 will be sold for Rs 6,500, while Canvas Win 121 will go on sale for Rs 9,500. Those prices are way better than what Nokia has to offer. We’re not sure how much of market share Micromax’s Windows Phone will steal from Android, but Nokia (or Microsoft’s mobile division) isn’t going to be very happy with those prices for sure. However, it’ll be a win win situation for Microsoft in the end, since the loss in sales of Lumia handsets will be more than offset by the increased penetration of Windows Phone in the market.
